The Open Space Committee is an official town committee appointed by the Northfield Selectboard.
Our job is to create and implement an Open Space and Recreation Plan.
The two main goals of the Northfield Open Space and Recreation Plan are to:
Ensure that Northfield protects farmland, forest land, scenic views, and other open space vital to sustaining the town’s historic rural character and maintaining the quality of air, water, and wildlife habitats.
Ensure that Northfield maintains and improves the variety, quality, and accessibility of recreational facilities important in the twenty-first century for health and well-being of all residents, and promote the use of these facilities and any organized programming thereof.
The committee works with local land trusts, such as Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust and Franklin Land Trust, to promote understanding of the value of conserved land, and to provide resources for landowners wishing to protect their land using a variety of tools.

Trail Work Opportunities
With lots of help from volunteers, the committee works all year long to keep the trails in town clear of debris, to maintain trail markings, and make sure trail fliers are available at trailheads and at the library.
Citizen Stewardship Award
Every year we recognize one of Northfield’s outstanding citizen stewards. If you know someone who meets the criteria, please nominate them for the award!
